The Digital Twin Paradigm

A digital twin is a bidirectional platform between a physical system and its virtual counterpart commonly applied in systems engineering applications. An engineering example is an aircraft engine with a twin engine built in digital form. Here, numerous exposure conditions and solutions can be tested in the digital engine—then the optimal solution applied to the physical engine.

The Athlete Digital Twin

Now, imagine a biodigital (athlete) twin that applies this approach to human systems to understand the state and trajectory of the human system. The Athlete Digital Twin is a mirror image of the athlete in digital form. Often, a subset of a system within an athlete is built to reflect a specific objective, such as optimizing all aspects of muscle building, maintenance, repair, and recovery. The Athlete DT is developed from a proven suite of technology to animate data, gain understanding, and support decision making in real time. The Athlete Digital Twin is also modeled after the Astronaut Digital Twin being built by our team. The Astronaut Digital Twin is designed to facilitate human performance and survival in the harsh environment of space, where muscle, bone, and the cardiovascular system are at risk of atrophy. It is being readied for missions to the Moon and Mars.
The purpose of this site is to introduce you to the concept of the digital twin, specifically the Athlete Digital Twin. Since there is considerable crossover from the Astronaut Digital Twin to the Athlete Digital Twin, we will refer you to the Astronaut Digital Twin site to explain in more detail how the digital twin for human performance works (see below)

The Challenge

Training places heavy physiological and metabolic stress on the human system. A major driver ability of performance is how adaptable that system is. However, different people have different adaptation profiles which are dependent upon numerous factors. Within this gestalt, how do we optimize training and recovery? The Athlete DT platform is being built for this purpose.

Methodology

The realization of the Athlete DT follows a rigorous methodology to realize three different objectives on the course to a full functional digital twin.

The Ecosystem

How can the Athlete DT platform be leveraged to support the needs of athletes? The Athlete DT Platform exists within an ecosystem that is designed to optimize its value to these groups by providing access to individual data via app or API, population analyses for oversight and policy decision support, and access to and contextualization of data for researchers.
